Derek Barker

PERSONAL - Derek lives in Kingston, Washington with his son Grady (9) and daughter Shay (3). He’s newly single and this means two things: 1) If any of your sisters are lookin’, there’s a good guy out there. 2) Derek is allowed to play golf whenever he wants. Derek is in the process of launching an HVAC company called Aireserve of Kitsap county. He’s played golf since he was 11 or 12 and, like all of us, wishes he was better. That said, he’s a good athlete and will hold his own.

TIE TO THE MONTEMAR - Derek probably ties into this group in a thousand ways. He was born in Canada, did kindergarten in Barbados, then ended up in Kitsap County and eventually found Snider Park. If you’ve read these profiles, you know there are a lot of Kitsap County baseball players in this group and Derek has played ball with most of them. I first met Derek when I was coaching at the high school and he was a senior. He was a plus outfielder with good speed and a better personality. I’m sure Will, Justin, Neil and some of the other guys met him much earlier in life. He’s a guy’s guy with a fun personality and makes a great addition to The Montemar.

ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MONTEMAR - Nothing yet but at the very least Derek will make for a good time.

WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN 2024 - We make it a little tough on rookies because nobody wants to see a newbie walking away with the shitty corduroy jacket. His 17 handicap probably puts him in a pretty open division for day one and if he can use his new found free time to figure out how to score a little better he might find himself near the top of the board after Saturday’s round. To remain up there on Sunday he’ll need to put together a formidable scramble team. In our format, the most successful scramble teams will be made up of one great player, a couple solid players with high handicaps, then somebody so shitty he really inflates that overall handicap. That said, Sunday is called a hungover scramble for a reason and the main focus here should be having a fucking blast. How the draft works out will help determine where Derek winds up in the end.

ODDS TO WIN - 96-1

FUN FACT - Delivered his own daughter. I don’t know the details with this but I’m going to imagine it was in a moving vehicle.
