Sean Story
PERSONAL – Sean lives in Red Bluff, California with his wife Michelle. They have two grown sons – Sam (26) and Max (20). Sean is a general contractor who started Story and Sons construction 24 years ago. He is also a pastor and counselor and volunteers as a chaplain for the city fire department. Sean started golfing 2 years ago but he’s hooked!
TIE TO THE MONTEMAR – Sean claims to obsess over everything he might be into – I can relate – and one day he decided he wanted to learn to sail. He took his family to a sailing race and it was all downhill after he joined the hobbie fleet 2 sailing family. Troy Szabo, a veteran member of that sailing family, took Sean under his tutelage.
During Covid the lakes were closed (sounds crazy as I type this but everything was back then) and the sailing team decided to circle the wagons (RVs) in Troy’s backyard.
Heading into that weekend Sean had no idea he was about to become an addict…
He remembers it like it was yesterday. Troy handed him a pitching wedge and after a quick lesson Sean made his first contact. The crisp sound of solid contact still resonates in his ears! He woke up the next morning and had to have another crispy hit. That was 2 years ago and his love for golf has only increased.
For all the downfalls of the pandemic, it sure was good for golf. I probably don’t know Troy otherwise, Sean probably doesn’t golf otherwise, and there are countless other similar stories. I’m glad the lake was closed and that Sean picked this game up. I can already tell we got a good one here and am looking forward to meeting Sean in Scottsdale.
ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MONTEMAR – Last year Sean donated a sweet leather belt and possibly something else also I believe. We’ll see what he comes up with this year.
WHAT NEEDED TO HAPPEN IN 2023 – He’s only been golfing for 2 years but sounds like Sean plays whenever he can. He’s on my 4-man team and I’m hoping there’s some pars in his tank. The foursome of him, Bob, and Kirk should be a sneaky good scramble team as well. How he fares on the par 3s, something myself (also a relatively new player) can often struggle with, will play a big part on how far he moves up that leaderboard. No matter the result though I’ve got a feeling Sean is going to have a blast being out there and hitting those crispy shots with a great group of guys.
WHAT NEEDED TO HAPPEN IN 2023 – Sean entered last year’s tournament as one of the newer golfers in the field, one who didn’t pick the game up until his 47th year on this planet. That said, the 106 at TPC Scottsdale, which was only 5 strokes behind Nathan Udy, was a very impressive feat. He followed that one up with a 104 over at Talking Stick. Both very solid rounds for a newbie. Most importantly, I’m guessing that Sean had a blast as he was very quick to sign up for Idaho.
WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN 2024 – Sean will head to Idaho as a seasoned Montemar vet and one who has now played 36% more golf than he’d ever played heading to Scottsdale. This scoring system is built for guys like Sean to be able to compete and it’ll be interesting to see what happens. He’ll need to put together powerhouse scramble team and catch some luck with the random pairings. If he can hit some greens on the par 3s and avoid big numbers there’s not reason to think Sean can’t make a run at the top 10.
ODDS TO WIN – 70-1
FUN FACT – As a professional window washer, Sean works in trade with his local golf club for unlimited golf and cart use.
