TIE TO THE MONTEMAR – I’m not sure Brendan needed a tie to the Montemar. I envision that he was playing golf one day when an email notification caught his attention - It was the 2022 Montemar classic invite. Brendan saw five things – Golf, fun dudes, Sun, Scottsdale, Tournament. If I didn’t know a little better I would envision that he went straight to venmo and paid Mike that second, without knowing a single person in the tournament or what the hell it actually was.

I envision that stuff because that’s about how fast he paid. In reality, it happened just a little bit differently. Jake Puckett had been slacking big time in getting me a list of his buddies names who he thought may enjoy the Montemar. He finally sent me a list, but he was the last person I was waiting on, and I sent the invite immediately after. Jake didn’t have time to let the people he invited know that he was inviting them to a golf tournament. So, when Brendan got the invite, he had no idea what it was. I think he may have signed up even without knowing Jake but when he saw his buddy Jake’s name on this list he sent his buddy a quick text…. I believe it was something along the lines of “Is this legit?”

Jake let him know it was awesome and Brendan paid his deposit minutes later. A couple days later, when he realized he could pay the entire amount already, he did. Brendan told me the other day he wanted to pay early so he’d be financially committed.

He was financially committed but a work nightmare forced him to miss his first ever Montemar. I could tell by the words in his text how disappointed he was. He’s back again though, financially committed for the full amount, and is ready to start his Montemar career.

It seems like the Montemar is getting a really good one with Brendan. Sounds like a cool guy who’s a good communicator, donating stuff to the tournament, and the type of golfer (1.3) who can knock my dear friend Addi off his high horse 😊

ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MONTEMAR – Last year Brendan donated 3 shooter McGavin golf towels to the prize fund.

WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN – He’s the best golfer in the tournament by more than 3 strokes. The question here shouldn’t be what needs to happen for Brendan to win the tournament, it should be what needs to happen for one of the other 79 guys to stop that from happening. One of my biggest goals with our scoring system is to stop the best player or biggest cheater from winning this thing every year. The last two years that failed, as Mike Addison, the best player in both fields, has won twice. We’ve made quite a few tweaks to the scoring system – random pairings based on handicaps, hard to go low – lose your clubs scramble, a draft, and a number of other things designed to keep this thing close come Sunday - and the jacket available to all. That said, it’s hard to keep the top guy down, especially when he’s the top guy by more than 3 strokes. Brendan’s got good payment points and a couple referral points, I believe, and will probably gather a lot of par 3 points. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of scramble team he ends up on. He should be the first pick in the draft for Sunday’s round and that pairs him with one of the weaker players. We’ll see if he has the same patience as Addy did a year ago in the same boat.

ODDS TO WIN – 10-1

FUN FACT – Straight from Brendans – “Both my wife and I have a mole in our bellybuttons. Too gross? Too soon? I don’t use a glove for golf and I really take a practice swing… why waste a perfectly good swing. Efficiency. I also have played both Augusta and Cypress in the same year.”
