WILL FENTON

PERSONAL – Will lives in the Greenwood neighborhood of Seattle, Washington with his wife Alice and daughter’s Everly (5) and Harper (3). He works as a senior superintendent for Compass GC, where he’s been for 12 years. Will started golfing around the age of 12 and would go to the driving range and play a few rounds a year with his dad. He has continued to play at about that rate most of his life.

TIE TO THE MONTEMAR – Will is another North Kitsap kid and one some of these guys (like Neil) have probably known forever.  Since I don’t know that story and I’m in a hurry I’ll move on to what I do know. My first memory of Will is probably exactly 30 years old. My brother’s little league team, the memories are mostly vague – Elephant (Uliphant? Somethingphant?) Brother’s Plumbing, or something sounding similar – had two “stud” 12 year-old pitchers – Jay Fogle and Sebastian Kenyon. They needed a third though and the coach (I believe it was Krepps?) drafted an up and coming 10 year old named Will Fenton. He was a tiny and quiet little guy (most 10s are when standing next to 12s) but he threw okay and punished the strike-zone, which for the bottom 5 hitters in any little league lineup is all you need. He made a great number three hill for a regular season NK Little League team.

Fast forward a decade and this little guy grew up to be quite the pitcher.  In 2003, as the closer for The University of Washington, Will earned All-American honors after allowing 0 runs, earned or otherwise, for the ENTIRE season. 32.1 scoreless innings, a streak that would continue into the next season and stop at 43.1 scoreless innings. The starting pitcher on the bump the day the streak ended was a guy most of you know – a little scrawny kid by the name of  Tim Lincecum. Will was eventually drafted by the Cubs and later picked up by the Mariner’s organization but his arm had fallen off along the way and he had to hang up the cleats.

I haven’t seen Will in years, I believe the last time was at a golf tournament in Indianola, and am pumped to see him in Idaho. He’s a great guy and another great addition to the Montemar.

ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MONTEMAR – The “more” in Total Wine and More sounds like a pretty good deal.

WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN 2024 – Will is a good athlete and strikes the ball well but says his putting skill is similar to that of Happy Gilmore’s in act 1. Luckily for Will, Happy was able to figure out how to putt in one cinematic hour. Will’s got close to 4 months to figure it out and if that fails he’ll just need to drink fast as he claims to get better after 5-7 beers. By my calculations he should be draining putts by the 2nd or 3rd green. If that happens he could be dangerous. Of course, what it will really come down to is all the other stuff – the draft, random pairings, scramble team, bonus points, and all the other little details we have that usually take rookies a year or six to figure out. The important thing here is that Will has a blast and the bev-cart girls stock up with enough coors light.

 ODDS TO WIN – 43-1

FUN FACT – Will hurt his neck in 2019 on the bottom of a Miami pool and took an Uber to the hospital. They took an x-ray and immediately told him not to move, that his neck was shattered. He’s all good now.
