Kevin Hancock
PERSONAL – Kevin lives in Poulsbo, Washington with his wife Erin and their two boys – Nolan (17) and Carson (13). He’s been a mortgage loan officer and CFP for 20 years and is licensed in Washington, Oregon, California, and Arizona. Kevin started golfing when he was 12 but never took it seriously before he started playing in a league and men’s club 8 years ago. Like most of us, he’s still not as good as he’d like to be.
TIE TO THE MONTEMAR – Kevin is from my home-town of Poulsbo, Washington, but he’s a few years older and I’m not sure that I’ve ever met the guy. He’s got a name and face that sounds and looks so familiar but I’m having a very hard time putting my finger on it. That said, he’s been buddies with Jay Cleveland since they were kids and became better friends with him when they got to college. The two were in the same fraternity at WSU – GO HUSKIES!
Kevin enjoys boating, golfing, family ski trips, and coaching/watching his kids play sports – soccer, flag football, baseball, basketball, wrestling. His home course is Gold Mountain in Bremerton, Washington and happens to be the course where I sort of learned to play golf way back in my younger days.
He seems like a fantastic guy/dad/husband/friend who loves sports and golf and makes another wonderful addition to the Montemar.
ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MONTEMAR – Kevin is working on a cool prize to bring to Scottsdale and I’ve got a feeling he could be good for helping to convince a couple more Poulsbo natives to join this event in the future – possibly one or both of those Ingalls brothers.
WHAT NEEDED TO HAPPEN IN 2023– Kevin says his golf game is always up and down (we can relate) and doesn’t see himself winning. I’d like to think our scoring system gives him a better chance than he thinks. His good buddy and playing partner, Jay Cleveland, is in it to win it and Kevin will get to piggy back quite a bit off of Jay. Not only are they scramble partners paired with two capable guys in Udy and Crider, if things stand and we have no additions or subtractions to the tournament, they’ll also make up two players of a randomized 4-man team on Friday. This means that if Jay plays to his abilities and Kevin happens to be “up” that weekend, there’s a very good chance he’ll be hanging around come Sunday.
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPPENED IN 2024 – As I look through last year’s scorecards, the first thing that catches my attention is that Kevin had no luck when it came to the random pairings. The second thing I notice is that Kevin was one of only a few to put up a worse round the final round than the first. Talking Stick was a much easier course and there were special cards in place that helped most peoples scores out a bit. So why the fall on the final round? My best guess is because Kevin, who’s not a spring chicken anymore, showed up to Scottsdale and rallied like he was still a student at WSU. I don’t think he missed a day of fun and probably wore down a little by the end.
WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN 2024 – I’m hoping for a lot more of the same. Kevin was a blast to hang out with and rallying for four days is what this tournament’s all about. This year he’ll have the benefit of a generous returner’s handicap which should help get him in the top half after the opening round. That’s what it’s designed for. He’ll also have the benefit of playing on what is almost home turf. The man went to school in Pullman, which is 50 minutes from our hotel and Circling Raven, although he’s so old Circling Raven probably didn’t exist when he was there. It will be great to see Kevin again and see what he can do.
ODDS TO WIN – 68-1
FUN FACT – Kevin was the only witness to Jay’s hole-in-one 20 years ago. He’s witnessed two other aces in his life but is still waiting on his first. I’ve got a feeling it’s coming at the Montemar.
