Darrin Cripe
PERSONAL - Darrin lives in Kansas City, Kansas with his wife Lauren and their daughter, Lilly (20mo). He’s the director of business development for an MSO cannabis group. Darrin took up golf in the 7th grade.
TIE TO THE MONTEMAR - Darrin met Jay Cleveland on a golf trip to Eastern Washington 7 or 8 years ago. I don’t know the details of this trip but I’d have to imagine there was some mutual Kitsap connection as Darrin was living in Poulsbo at the time, Jay’s home town and also where many in this tournament grew up. Whatever the details of their meeting, they bonded over the same things we all bond over; Golf and ______ and golf______ and golf and __________. Fill in the blanks and you’ll be right. Darrin lives in Kansas City now (too bad we didn’t know of the guy three months ago before Mike moved back from there) but spent the past 10 years in Poulsbo and hopes to move back to P-Town in a year or so.
While in Poulsbo Darrin was a member at White Horse and played in a number of Kitsap and Washington State Amateur Tournaments. He played a year olf college golf at Toledo then transferred to Coastal Carolina where he was a teammate of Dustin Johnson. I knew we had a ringer when Jay added Darrin after a late fallout in the 11th hour, but it seems like we got a pretty good guy as well. In the brief email interactions I’ve had he’s been great and will hopefully become a Montemar member for many years to come.
ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MONTEMAR - Darrin is donating a brand new (in the box) Master’s Mug and a box of ProV1s. Thanks!
WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN 2024 - Darrin has played in a lot of golf tournaments but he’s never played in one quite like this before. Our scoring system is designed to be tough on rookies and mostly equal for players of all skill levels. To do the latter we rely a lot more on team games and random pairings than handicaps. This means Darrin will often be teamed (not necessarily paired with) players of much less ability. They’ll be hoping he goes low and he’ll be hoping they make their random birdie or par on the holes where he struggles. That all said, it can be hard to keep players of superior skill level down for too long. Birdies, eagles, and greenies are all good for points and they add up fast with the better players. Mike Lee proved last year it’s possible for a rookie to hang around. This year I’d expect the winner of the Cripe-Noonan showdown at the Resort Course to crack the top five of the leaderboard and possibly even win the thing.
ODDS TO WIN – 12-1
FUN FACT – Darrin has been to the Master’s twice in the last five years and used to live in the Old Murphy house on Hostmark in Poulsbo.
